Fêtons la phonétique! Let’s celebrate phonics! 
Dear parent(s)/guardian(s),
Phonetic awareness is a major component of reading and writing skills and strategies. Developing a strong awareness of letter sounds and blends is important to support the development of reading and writing. The tendency of many students is to apply the phonics of their first language to secondary languages which can lead to confusion and inaccuracy in use of the language. To combat this, and to promote strong French readers and writers we will be focussing on a variety of phonetic blends in the weeks to come.

Monday you will notice a W.O.W. list (words of the week) coming home in French. These words will usually be focused on a particular French phonetic blend that we are working on in class. We will begin with simple blends and we will continue towards more complex ones. These words will be practised in class throughout the week through poems/stories and a variety of activities to reinforce writing and reading skills and strategies. Once a phonetic blend has been reviewed, the students are expected to apply that knowledge to their written work and their reading.

Each week we will explore a variety of word-study and practise strategies that you can use at home!
Here is a strategy to start you off. When your child comes home with their new word list copy the words onto cue cards or post-its. There is a variety of games you can play with the words once they are on cue cards. Make a double set of the word list and play a memory game with them. Practise saying the words aloud each time you turn over a new card. Your child may also practise making simple and complex sentences that contain the words so help build their French vocabulary. You will also find additional strategies that you can use at home on the reverse of this page J
